BETTONA
AND ITS SURROUNDINGS
Bettona lies on the top of a hill facing Assisi; it overlooks
a vast territory, which goes from Perugia and Spello to the Sibillini
Mountains, thus deserving its nickname of "Balcony of Umbria",
or "Etruscan Balcony". The Etruscans first founded this
city on the left side of the Tiber river and it played an important
role throughout the Roman period. It has an ellipsoidal plan and
it is surrounded by a one-km Etruscan and Medieval wall. Many
important monuments bear witness to its magnificent past, both
in the city and in the surrounding area. Along the almost intact
Etruscan walls you can visit the Etruscan hypogeum (II b. C.);
you can also climb the nearby Medieval tower of Molinaccio, or
else admire the 17th century Villa Boccaglione. Many other art
treasures are kept in the Pinacoteca Comunale, the local picture
gallery.
